I'm hoping someone can shed some light on this for me. I just purchased this machine Saturday and drove it 7 miles home. I have a serial number from the plate and my local dealer was no help on telling me what I really have.
14/N/2/094/308345/7 - machine serial number
LD960929L - engine serial number
13027/684/3460 - gearbox serial number
42013 - t/c serial number
02999 - rear axle serial number
The hour meter works and it says 2583hrs The previous owner bought it from a local electric company in the early 90's and he said it had just over 2k hours when he got it. The machine is real tight and the only slop is in the backhoe bucket pins. It also came with 2 boxes of parts. I have rebuild kits for just about every hydraulic cylinder on the machine, torque converter parts, brake parts, lights and more.
Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Bobby

The serial number suggests a 1987 or 88 Project 7 machine. To me in the UK it would be known as an early 3D grey cab. Perkins 4.236 non turbo engine. Some would also say it's a 3CX but the serial no. suggests 3D. To you in the USA,it's a 3C 1400.

Re: New to me JCB 1400
Thank you very much. I have called a couple of dealers within a few hundred miles of my house and they were all lost. Seems unless you can provide them with a part number they don't have any information on the machine.
What would "Project 7" machine mean? is that like a series number?
Thank you

Re: New to me JCB 1400
I think the first 3CX which was a white cab(the colour of the cab frame, not the roof) was a project 5 but the overall upgrade from the old style 3C mk3 to the new design of CX machines was known as Project 200! Next came project 6 or black cab, then 7....grey cab. 5 to 7 machines all looked similar with slight upgrades over the years. The P8 then was a mostly new design again. Don't know why they jumped to 12 and then away to project 21!!
Steelfab would be the man in the know on the subject but he hasn't been on here since March. Maybe he'll look in again.........

Hi Rob
Welcome to,the site!
If you go onto the downloads page on this site and tap on the JCB link in earthmoving equipment category there is a workshop manual that is headed " JCB 214 3CX 1400B" on the first page, hopefully this will shed some light on your machine? Has it got standard jack legs or wing ones?
Ian

This machine has been repainted all yellow. It has what I guess you would call wings and open ROPS. I am going to try and upload some pictures.

It's got to be earlier than '87. Early style dash and steering column(up to 84 I think) and front grille but looks to have a later type backhoe boom.
