ARGH! 3C MkIII Knocking like a good (bad) 'un!

The engine (Leyland 4.98NT) has just started to knock on cylinder 1 (water was previously getting into the oil - unsure if it's the head gasket that had failed or liners).

Anyway, she's sat in my barn looking very sorry for herself.

Just after a bit of advice really - the more I look into it online and speak to neighbouring farmers, the more I seem to think it would be better to source a replacement engine. Do you think the same? I've had a quick look on the famous online auction website, but to no avail.

Does anyone know of any sources, whether it's a stand alone engine or a rotten machine with the 4/98NT? I've stuck a wanted ad in the wanted section, but thought I'd post here as well, as someone might know a company/someone with one.

Is yours a build 5 power train or a manual gear box? There was a problem mixing unbalanced and balanced engines. I think it may have been putting an unbalance truck engine into rigid mount tractor or digger. Cannot think it would matter the other way around.

guessing its not good from what you are describing but you never know
If the crank is still good it is probably cheaper and a better end result to fix your motor as you know its all ok then

Maybe some further investigation needed before spending any money might be the go as no matter what you do your motor has to come out and its not a lot more work to pull it apart once it's out and you know for sure then

Ive got one that came out of a fire damaged machine, i was going to sort it all out but have never got around to doing it apart from fitting new fuel filters and bracket, i scourced a water pump and i think i have a starter motor, all the fuel pies would need changing over. The engine turns over by hand.

Pete, it's a Brockhouse TC model. Thanks for the info regarding the truck engines - I didn't realise that. I've marked that 272 engine in my watch list and will message him.

Paul - I know what you are saying. I'm just worried that the cost of a rebuild would easily go past the four figure mark and I'd end up with an engine that isn't running right (I've never done a rebuild before).

Would try to repair your own engine. Dismantle your engine to see exactly what is wrong with it. Should be able to do this without removing engine from machine. Remove injectors & head. Take off sump and remove big ends one at a time and push piston out. Clean top face of block to see there are no cracks between liners. If no cracks you should be able to fit new liners &pistons. Might need to remove engine if crank shaft has to come out to be ground.

Thanks Hubert - the more I think about it, the more I'm edging towards a rebuild - I will follow your guide and keep his thread updated of any progress made (or not made).

Just an update and possibly after some advice.

Today, we've managed to remove the head. Looks like cylinder number 3 (number 1 being the one closest to the radiator) is the problem cylinder. The head gasket looks to have cracked here. Liners look ok. I'll get some photos up to see what you think.

I'm not too sure what is causing the knock at this stage.

I'm going to check the pistons for any play and clean the surfaces up with some paraffin and emery cloth and report back.

What has slightly alarmed me is that I don't think there's a thermostat and I'm lead to believe without a thermostat the water takes the easiest route and just circulates around the engine without going through the radiator on a 4/98.

On cleaning the block, I found a "JCB Service Exchange Plate". Does anyone know what this is?

Hmm - a quick google as that part number as a replacement engine!
