JCB Motor Details

Post #1 by MickeyJM » Mon Sep 04, 2017 2:42 pm

Hi everyone, my first post here so please forgive my naivety. We have an old JCB backhoe that I want to repair the motor on for my elderly father. I'm not sure what I need really, but I suppose my the starting point is a definitive answer to which model and motor the unit is. Dad's lifted the following information from it...

498NT189754853 , 384B - 189772 , 32149.

Could anyone point me in the right direction? Thanks.

Mick

Hi Mick,You have a Leyland BMC 4/98NT engine as also found in Leyland 270 or 272 tractors.

Similar has come up in another thread. It would be easy to think the 384 would relate to an early Leyland tractor but I don't think they were fitted with the 4/98 engine. IIRR later models included a /and a digit relating to build type eg /5 for the power train.
