More worn out parts on the old girl.
I'm trying to change the kingpins on the front axle. I have managed to drill out the retaining pin, but the main pin wont budge, even with a full swing of a sledge hammer.
Is there a certain direction they should come out, i.e. up or down or either?

Should come out either way.You're likely going to need a large amount of heat on the axle ends.Mine needed heat and I sledged the axle down the way, with a steel bar between the ground and the bottom of the king pin.It left the top of the axle somewhat battered but it was either that or take the axle out and put into a press.
Did you know the retaining pins are tapered and only go out and in one way?

Yes the pin (supposedly) comes out non-threaded end first. I had an old post about this some years ago, I've just gotten round to working on the kingpins again. There was 100 other more important things to do first!

with all the parts disconnected from the hub assy {wheel, track rod and power steering ram}you need to cut the kingpin at top and bottom of the axle so you can remove the hub assy.
then make sure the kingpin is cut flush with the top of the axle.
then make a drift with a handle {as near to the same size as the kingpin}
you will need someone to hold the drift, and make sure you support the axle from below ,and wedge the axle at the top
then start swinging the sledge
you may also need to apply heat on to the axle aswell if they are really tight.
these kingpins are either easy or a pain to do
good luck

About a 100 years ago I was told a really stubborn king pin needed heating, then quenching immediately then drifting out , I've tried it a few times and it works (maybe luck who knows but it worked for me)

That sounds like a great idea!! I'll give it a go

I did the kingpins on my 3CX a couple of weeks ago. I did as was mentioned previously and cut the pin to get the hub off.
If you can I would leave the top section proud so that you can get a few good blows directly onto the pin before having to use the drift. Then its just a matter of heating, WD40 and sledging. Mine took a lot of effort.
