3C2 Cutting out? - Fuel Tank?

Post #1 by SiH » Tue Jan 24, 2017 11:50 am

Morning All,
I`m pretty sure that I need to clean the fuel tank on my old girl,as each time the machine is driven down steep gradients or surges forward in use the engine dies. As the fuel pipe feed is on the front left corner of the tank, I suppose any crap in the tank will go in that direction blocking it. Each time its happened, I pump the lift pump until I hear the fuel going back to the tank via the injector return pipe, then try to start it. After the 3rd attempt at this it gets back to life as normal until next time,
The top of the tank has been cut and welded up again for access a couple of times by the look of it.

Oops hit the wrong buttons!
I've looked at old posts on here about this problem that many have had,and like the idea of either bolting a plate ontop of the whole that I'll cut in the tank for future problems, and also the idea of putting the fuel feed pipe on the side of the tank above the existing connector, away from crap in the bottom.
Anybody done anything like this recently? What did you get in the tank?- old Tesco trolleys? Shoes? And fag packets?! ;)
Cheers boys.

It will be like a brown silt in the bottom.

Thanks Pete, it looks like I'll have to get on and do it before i use it again. I did check the breather yesterday, and it did seem a bit blocked,so whether this will make a difference now that its clear time will tell.
Is there a diagram anywhere showing the exact positioning of the fueltank in the bodywork of a 3c2 anywhere? I did look on the net but not found anything yet? I have had friends telling me to use a remote tank, but I hate the idea of doing that to my old girl!? ;)

The tank is built into the bulkhead behind the engine. I think we filled our 3C11 through the little door on the cab step side but on the 3C111 the filler was at the front of the tank (just ahead of the screen).

Yep, thats the same as mine, thanks Pete. It would be good to see a diagram of the layout to show how far it reaches along the bulkhead,as i dont want to cut into the hydraulics with a grinder if I can help it. I'm sure i saw a pic somewhere... just cant think where!?

You can just see the fuel sender in this picture, above the steering box :)

Finally got round to doing a bit on the 3c2. I checked the fuel flow from the tank to the filter/sedimenter which was good and fast. However from that to the lift pump was a different story- when the uniion was undone fuel slowly dripped out! Taking the bowl off the bottom of the Fram C119PL filter showed water and green/brown crud. So looks like i need a new filter. Havnt looked at the lift pump yet as the heavens opened just for a change! So a job for another time. ;)
