JCB 2

Post #1 by thebigchevyguy » Mon Nov 07, 2016 3:15 pm

Hi, I have just bought a JCB 2 (has 2 on the back hoe) but I'm unsure of how old it is and as to what engine it uses? I know it's a BMC 3 cylinder but what type? I have no data plate as it's rotted away and little to go on. It's not got a detachable back hoe and doesn't have the later type dash board, so guessing it's not a 2B. Any ideas to how old it is and what model it may be? Cheers

I will take a picture when I can this is the best I have currently

look forward to seeing some more photos.
I have my eye on a 2bii with detachable backhoe, that also has no cab, bmc 3 cylinder engine.
yours could be a 2b

Few more pics I took last night. I'm thinking it pre dates the 2b, is it mk1 or 2?

Cheers

Max I am not sure of the exact model it is earlier than a 2B but not sure what the original cab looked like, Julian Carder may be able to help you with that.

Probably had the rear sloping screen and the forward opening door looking at the step through in the frame. Martin H will likely know but the Nuffield engine puts it probably between 1965 and 1966/7.

Hi, if your digger has no detachable backhoe then its a JCB 2. With it having the 3 cylinder engine this means it was manufactured after July 1964. With it having a five speed box this means it cant have been manufactured after 1965. So in summary your digger is July 1964 - 1965.

This box is five low and five high 10 altogether, it's based on a Nuffield 10/42. What changed in 1966 then? What tractor/gearbox did the JCB receive? Just curious

Cheers

In 1965 the 10 speed box was used and an updated 3 cylinder engine was used that gave 45hp as opposed to the 42hp beforehand.

Right, I have a 10 speed box I unseized the clutch drove it about a bit all gears work ok. Braking is slightly less responsive...! I'm sure now it's 100℅ a Nuffield 10/42 skid. Machine works spot on!

Is there anyway I can date it from a cast number etc? I'd love to know how old it is I'm guessing 1966/7 now with the ten speed?
