Hi Guys,
I have a 1988 JCB 3CX 4WD Grey Cab and the boom ram has a bad leak so seals need to be replaced.
Anyone got any advice/experiences of dealing with this type of repair, and how best to approach it?
How much does it cost typically to get the RAM seals replaced? (i already have the new boom Ram seal kit) .. I plan to remove/refit the ram on the JCB myself, to cut down on labour costs, but was considering dropping the RAM to a shop to get seals done.
Thanks
Bill.

Find a local hydraulic shop and get them to give you an idea of likely cost. Seals can be quite cheap but some hyd shops can be a tad expensive. They are heavy old things to shift on your own and sometime quite hard to pull apart and reassemble. Also without the right tool getting the end cap removed can be a bit of a PITA.

I've only ever done the steering ram so far , it will be hard graft on the big ram !.
I'd be looking for a shop that'll just change the seals only , leaving the painting and such like to yourself .
Can you see what condition the rod is in or is it hidden ?. Similarly bushes and pins .
I'd have the correct end caps for the hoses and ram ready .
No doubt you've thought about all that already .
Take a deep breath and fire in ....

A mate helped me get the boom ram out using his mini digger which was great. We let the dipper arm out to one side and as flat as we could, then removed the rod end pin of the boom ram, started the engine and retracted the rod. Then we turned off the engine, let the pressure off by moving the levers and then marked and removed the pipes. then we removed the cylinder end pin in the boom ram and lifted out the ram using the mini digger which was easy. I dropped it to a shop and they have sealed replaced now. The bushing in the cylinder end was completely gone, but the rod end was fine. The hole also was gone oval so i will have to get it milled and pressed with a new bushing. New pin is probably required too but it will be a good job when its all done, hopefully.

Thanks for that Bill .
I had a notion to start doing the bushes on the back arm , but there are a few other jobs to come first .....

Well I have it all back together again. Definitely not a job to attempt without a machine to lift the Boom ram. Its a heavy beast. The workshop did a really good job on the cylinder end and put in a new insert and new bushing and it has left the machine super tight. Plenty of grease from here on in is all its needs

I realize this is an old post but any advice would be great.
Where in Ireland did you get the ram cylinder end hole milled and re-bushed?
I have the same problem with my old 3CX and am wondering who could do this kind of engineering.
Thanks
Joe
