3C Mark III Will not start up.

Post #1 by mickdoc6238 » Sun Oct 16, 2016 11:36 am

Hi Guys

I have always had great help on here so hope someone may be able to help with my problem.

I was working yesterday with the old girl and stopped the engine for a few mins and when I jumped back in the Cab the engine would not start up again.
Thinking I may have have mistakingly ran out of Diesel as the fuel dial no longer works I filled her up,and started to bleed her with the Bleed nut on the side of the Injector pump. The Diesel came squirting and no air seems to be in the system but there was no way she would fire up.

I started working my way at the Diesel tank, cleaned the filters and emptied the Glass bowl which had quite a lot of dirt in it and made sure Diesel was running though the system all the way up to the Injector pump and all seem good but having taken of Number 1 and 4 pipes off the top of the engine and turning over the engine it seems no fuel is coming into the engine from the injector pump although the fuel comes out very strong from the bleed screw.
I am sure there is no problem with fuel all the way up to the Injector pump.

Anyone know what my problem could be ?
Thanks Mick

Are you getting diesel through to the bleed screws when cranking the engine on the key or only when working the lift pump by hand? If only by hand then the lift pump internal lever is worn.
Below the inlet fuel pipe connection to the inj pump, should be a plastic filter gauze. Have you checked it? If not,do so but try not to remove the regulating valve body as you pull the gauze out as the little piston inside will fall into the hole and can be a pain to get back out. This piston may also be stuck, caused by contaminated fuel ,and will stop fuel going through to the injectors as well.

Thank you agrimax for your fast input.
The fuel is spraying out of the bleed screw on the injector pump when the engine is turned over.
I will have to take a look at the Plastic filter gauze you mention but do not recall seeing this all the time i have been working on fixing the problem. There has for sure been some bad fuel going though the system as the glass bowl I tipped out was full of Shit.
Thanks again

Hi,
Is yours a rotary or in line pump ?? I can't remember now.
If it is the rotary pump I don't think it can be a blockage of the nylon filter in the pump inlet as Agrimax says.
If so you would not have fuel at the pump bleed screws.
You will need to remove the fuel feed pipe from the pump and screw out the fitting to which it was attached, (15/16 AF spanner size), to access the filter.
I think possibly it's a problem in the pump itself.
More info. please.
Fred

Hi Fred
Rotary or Line pump ...to be honest I am a real novice and learning as I am going along. The machine is just for doing the odd job around the place when needed.I have attached a couple of pictures that i hope can be of help and happy to take a couple more in they are not what you need to answer your question.

You have a rotary injector pump. Your pump by now may not have this filter but it would have had originally. It could be partially blocked but allowing what looks like enough fuel through to bleed but not for starting. Failing that, the afore mentioned regulating valve does not like water etc at all,nor does the rest of the pump for that matter. If you do dismantle that end of the pump,it MUST be reassembled correctly or the engine will never start!
When you remove that nut with the 15/16'' spanner, followed by a heavy spring and a top hat shaped thingy, the filter,if there, sits around the valve body.Bit of wire with a hook on the end pulls it up out. If you lift the top hat plug out, below it,in the valve body is another spring and below that is the piston. Try pushing a fine punch or screwdriver into the hole gently, and feel if the piston goes down and then returns up again freely. If it does the problem is likely to be elsewhere and you may need a pump overhaul. If the piston doesn't move, you would need to pull out the valve body and free the piston and give it a polish with a bit of steel wool or fine emery. Refit with a drop of grease to keep it in place.

I have just spent most of the afternoon working on her and still no luck. The only plastic part on the Injection pump is a type of long thin cone shaped black plastic that is secured by some thin wire.Could this be it?
I have undone slightly the nuts that secure the pipes on top of the engine from the Inj pump and opened power lever fully to give max fuel and turned the engine over. There is slight signs of Diesel coming though although the engine never even tries to start.
How difficult is it to take off the Injector pump to work on ?

That plastic part with wire is a seal to stop the high speed adjusting screw being tampered with. The filter is internal below that big nut where the inlet fuel pipe is screwed down into. Or should be if it is still fitted! If you only want to check out this filter or the regulating valve you do not need to remove the pump, but if checking these does not sort the problem the pump will need overhauled by a specialist.I would also be assuming you can be as sure as possible that there are no air leaks about the system and that the stop lever on the top of the pump is in the full go position.
Can't just tell you about removal of the pump as I don't know whether there is a master spline or if the engine needs to be locked in a certain place with a pin to keep the timing right on refitting. Perhaps Fred will know?

I did all this and found the issue with mine was a blocked filter in the fuel tank... Take off the fuel line that connects to the tank, and see if its got a good flow on it. If its blocked, it will only trickle out.. I Also found fuel at every point when turning it over, but there wasnt enough fuel supply to start it or keep it running..

When you take apart the filter housing on the pump, the bits should look like this...

Which fits in here...
