Hi folks,

I've just purchased and had a 3c mkii delivered.

I'm not the typical classic enthusiast. I have bought the big lump of rusty metal to do a bit of landscaping on a relatively small bit of garden.

I'm a 32 year old guy who can't bring himself to pay for things I can do myself. I have a broad range of skills having worked at just about most things.

I figured it was going to be as 'economical' to buy a cheap digger as opposed to paying high prices for either hire for a few weeks (had option of cheap hire at £220 week for 4 ton track machine) or for a owner operator to do work for me (quotes of £1200+ basing it on a weeks digger work). Thing is that I wouldn't have everythng done at those prices and would likely need a digger back after a few weeks.

I have affectionately named the 3c 'Rusty' given that its covered in the stuff, particularly the cab.

The person it was bought from is a small farmer who has owned it for over 20 years. He has maintained it himself and said it hasn't let him down bar a few pipes.

Everything is working as it should. Only leak is on one of the loader rams. Some of the pipes have perished and tyres are in a ropey state but all functioning and will only be replaced as required.

I've attached pics. If any of you can tell me a bit more about it like year etc then I would greatly receive it. Is it the 4/98 or 38td??

Have downloaded the manuals for machine/engines.

Based in Northern Ireland.

Hi Steven and welcome to CMN  I am sure that somebody on here will be able to help you out with correctly identifying your machine; best of luck with it.

Welcome to the forum, in your pictures i can't see the side licghts and indicator light units if they are rectangular then it will be a 1973-1977 model earlier machines had smaller round side lights and seperate round indicator lights to there age range are 1969-1972 also the earlier machines had yellw cabs many of which got painted white to make the machine look newer, Your machine would have the 4-98 engine in it, You will find plenty of parts on Ebay for it and there are several JCB breakers around too so parts are fairly readily available, Good luck

Thanks for the welcome.

I took the time to powerhosing it today.

Looks to have been painted at on time, probably 20 years ago and underneath the white cab is yellow paint.

Behind the black JCB signs is red paint.

There is small round side lights with a rectangular lamp (indicator and sidelight) but these appear to have no function as there is no wires.

Hi Steven, your digger is a 69 - 72 machine. Originally it would have had a 38TD engine. I saw this advertised too and I just missed out on it to you by minutes.

As William said this is the earlier 1969-1972 machine the round side lights are the give away.it would have had a yellow cab when new.

Thought as much. I have no knowledge of either 38td or 4/98 but believe this is the simms minimec inline pump.

Dynamo/generator not working nor any electrics.

If I get bored sometime I might look at alternator and wiring. Doubt I will redo cab as I only intend to have it a short while. If I was going to it would be box section and no nice rounded corners.

William you will be more than welcome to it when I'm done....

If the price right Steven I might! This digger doesn't have its original engine but does have a 38TD in it from a Nuffield. Have you got a bonnet?

I do have a bonnet William but the hinge is seized and broke the weld (before I got it) I will get that sorted soon though.

The engine is a 4/98 by the looks of it, see pic.
