Jcb 3cx hydraulic leak in cab.

Post #1 by kenneth-1@tiscali.co.uk » Sun Jun 12, 2016 5:38 pm

Just wondering if anyone has had the front consol of on a 1982 3cx. I seem to have a pool of hydraulic fluid underneath. Brake fluid levels seem ok. Can't see behind to trace leak. Looks like a lot of work to get in.

It'll be from the steering orbital unit or a hose connected to it. Only a few screws holds the console together. With the screws removed, you should be able to disconnect the tacho and at least lift the dash up enough to see in.If need be remove the knob off the throttle lever, take off the steering wheel and disconnect a few wires and the lot should lift right off.

Thought it might be the steering but can't find any pictures to see what's in there. Is the orbital unit repairable or just a replacement item. Thanks for the info.

They are resealable. It might only be a leaking/lose fitting or a perished hose..

Thanks. Will take it to bits and have a look. Always wary when pulling to bits a 35 year old digger.

The Orbitrol is just below floor level so it might not be that . You can see it no bother from underneath the machine .
Mine was leaking and it runs down all the hoses and gets everywhere .

The Orbitrol seal kit is about 50 quid delivered . You need to get the special tools to re seal it . I tried without the tools and it was impossible , a really frustrating day spent before I eventually broke the seal . Assuming it is the seal in the steering shaft I would send it away to someone or buy a new one - cost me 205 quid plus VAT . With the new one I had the job done with new dowty washers in about an hour . I can't remember what size the spanner was but I cut one in two as it's a bit congested .

I have just posted another thread in relation to this problem. My 3cx has also sprung a leak from the orbitrol pump with oil passing the shaft seal. Does anybody know where I could send the pump off to for repair and any tips for undoing two bolts hiding behind steering coupling?
Thanks.
Gary
