1984 3cx gearbox fault

Post #1 by CraigA » Thu Jul 02, 2015 9:59 pm

Hi, don't know if anyone can help !!!!!

i bought a 1984 3cx a couple years ago needing a new king post etc which has been done + other bits

But now the forward drive has started to play up but reverse is good ! it will move for about 4 seconds then stop for about 4 seconds

Have checked the cables etc but all seems fine and also cleaned the suction filter in the bottom of the box and filled with new oil.

Would it be the o rings on the forward & reverse shaft.

Any suggestions would be GREAT

It sounds like the forward clutch pack is failing this can be if the oil is low or the dump valve is out of adjustment or if the clutch pack is burnt out , the reverse pack never seems to give problems

Thanks for the fast reply

A agricultural dealer / engineer told me today to check the o rings on the side of the box on the forward and reverse thingy before digging deeper ! is he right to check them or not ? but he did also offer me a reconditioned box etc for a £1000 does this sound ok

If the oil level and dump spool are ok it's going to be inside the box , I take it that it's the Borge warner forward and reverser type and not the later electric box , if it is the Borge warner shuttle £1,000 is a bit high for one, the parts are normally about £300 and the strip and rebuild is only 3/4 hours when the unit is on the bench.

o right ...ok,doesn't sound very good for me then !!! yea its a borge warner box

The recon one is both the gearbox and the forward and reverser and no that's not fitted either

I think i could knock him down from that price though

Unless there was a fault you will not need the gearbox. Vicary Plant used to do a recon exchange shuttle unit (ready to fit)
