Backhoe identity?????

Post #1 by TullyveeryClassicJCB » Mon Mar 23, 2015 1:37 am

It looks like a Fordson Major but what is the backhoe. Is it a 3 point linkage type? It looks too heavy to be a McConnell or Foster. Could it be a Sherman? http://www.donedeal.co.uk/tractors-for-sale/ford-major-digger/8977948?offset=3

Position of hydraulic tank on front is reminiscent of very early JCB.
Dipper on back actor looks very chunky and like it may be an extender. Could be a retrofit from a later machine.

I do not think its a JCB backhoe William ....... looks like a modern Case 590 backhoe, but its obviously not, but have a look at this, its a Sherman backhoe,

sherman.jpg

its not exact, but very near... it also reminds me of the Hymac/Whitlock 370 backhoe.

I'm going with the Whitlock as the dipper seems to be chunky enough to match. The sherman one is far too narrow.

I actually think the dipper is very thin and narrow.

I don't think it is a Whitlock, most had the unusual linkage on the boom. The big old king post sticking up ought to ID it really. Sherman certainly made a lot of back hoes that were mixed with a variety of machines.

If it was a Whitlock it would have the parellogram back hoe. The Whitlock 303 and Whitlock 370 and 570 had a conventional style backhoe with the closing of the boom ram raising the boom as opposed to lowering it.
