Hydraulic Oil VERY Slow To Fill

Post #1 by mikefoxo » Fri Feb 06, 2015 12:48 am

Burst a pipe as you do. Put the new one on in less than five minutes, then spent the rest of the day trying to top up the oil. At a rough guess it was probably taking a pint every 10 minutes :arrrrgh: Does anyone have any suggestions as to why it's so slow?? It's a JCB 3MkII btw

It's 20 years since I put oil in a 3c but I remember unscrewing a plug(same size as the filler plug) on the side of the filter head---I think. That plug is under strong spring pressure. Remove the spring and cylindrical plunger and refit the plug. Fill with oil and refit the bits.Hope this makes sense but it's what I used to do with mine to get oil into it.

I always fill via the breather holes. Its still slow to fill but quicker than filling through the filter.

I seem to remeber the handbook said fill with the loader arms partially raised. I may be talking bollo here and not sure why that would make any difference.

The big bung the same size as the filler cap is the by pass for the filter. I always used a plastic funnel and screwed/ wedged it in to the filler neck , some people put the right hand jack leg down to tilt over to the left , it's slow as the oil goes though the filter before it gets into the tank. It's just slow don't forget to put the cap back on before starting as it comes back quicker that it goes in!...

I was speaking to an old boy who used to work on 3CII's and he told me he used to disconnect one of the jack leg pipes and drop it into a barrel of hydraulic oil. Then with the engine running, operate the jack lever and suck the hydraulic oil into the system that way. It kind of sounds plausible, but I've never tried it...

I wouldn't as the pump could run dry before oil is sucked into it. It wouldn't be good for it.
