water in oil and oil in water?

Post #1 by daz28 » Sun May 11, 2014 12:24 am

hello chaps.
I recently purchased an old 3c 11 with the Leyland 4. 98nt engine. it was just above the scrap value and just intended to do a bit of landscaping .
its working fine (after a bit of work) but the engine is filling with water and the rad is filling with oil. is this just a simple head gasket or could it be liner seals or a cracked block/ head?

any advise welcome thanks

Before lifting the head off,it would be worth removing the sump and doing a pressure test on the cooling system.See if there is any water running/dripping from the liners etc by pressurizing the radiator.Trouble is that if you remove the head and don't see anything wrong, you won't be able to do the pressure test until the head is back on again.

Hello,

in my case the seals of the liners were bad and made water. The guy at the workshop told me that it was because of the age of the machine.

Greetings

I would suggest if the liners were leaking only you woud only see coolant in the oil and not visa versa to have oil on the coolant you would need to look where you can have cross contamination both ways, oil generally finds it way first as in operates at the higher pressure, howver when the engine shuts down then you can have the pressure neutralised and the contamination merges.

I was going to do the advised pressure test but though its easy enough to remove the liners so just go for it. i pulled them out today, seals were fine but the liners have holes in them. so its £415 for a rebuild kit. I cant work out how the rad and water jacket has filled with oil though. :dizzy:

Porous liners are common problem on this engine.

If it's of any interest, I can do you a kit of new parts, incl liners, pistons, rings, gaskets, con rod shells, main shells, sealing rings for £340+vat.
