3cx, what have I got myself into now?

Post #1 by Mark.Bamford » Fri Feb 21, 2014 6:15 pm

Already finding this place useful and now I want to make use of the more knowledgeable members! I've bought some land and have several building projects on, saw a 3cx for sale and thought, that'll come in handy, being called Bamford I thought I should have 1 anyway.
So my first question is "What is it?" I know it's a 4 wd sitemaster with an extradig back actor but I don't know what the engine is so any further information will be welcome.
Serial no. 3cx-4-297475/p
Engine 821133/j
Gearbox 13027/582/1883

I've looked at the manuals available as downloads and am in the same boat as someone who posted on here earlier today in that I can't see one that covers the right age of machine.
Already started on a service but am getting to the point where some more info would be usefull.
Any pointers gratefully received.

If you can post a few pictures that will also help us to identify it for you, do you know what year it is, what coloured cab does it have white, black or Grey, there are many different versions of the 3CX over the years from 1981 through to 1989, but iam sure that we will all be able to help and guide you, good luck and welcome to the forum.

Since your serial number is only 433 higher than mine,I would assume the machine to be a white cab of 82/83 vintage and it has a Perkins AD 4.236 engine.(p after the serial no.) Pictures will reveal all.

I will have to go back to look at the reg year as it is obscured on the photo, but let's see what the photos reveal....

A well specked model from the white cab era. Has it a manual forward/rev lever? Perkins engine as suggested by position of exhaust.

It's got a hand lever to the left that does forward/rev, it doesn't feel like you're moving anything so I'd guess electronic, there's another smaller lever under this that I haven't found out what it does yet so please tell me if you know! Good to know about the perkins engine, it was easy to get a manual for that but it seems that the web is silent as regards manuals for the early 3cx, some of the stuff in downloads helps but the later models seem quite different. I must admit I like the lack of electronics as I'm much better at fixing stuff you can hit/ unscrew!

The F/R lever isn't electric on the white cab.It operates a cable to the box.Not sure about the smaller lever below but would assume it is 4wd engagement perhaps? The pedal on the floor to the left of the brake pedals is a dump valve ie depressing it is the same as pulling the f/r lever into neutral.Works like a conventional clutch for changing gear although afaik they were often disconnected for some reason.

In case you're wondering why we say it's a white cab,it's because yours has been painted over. The white cab was the first 3CX followed by black, then grey.....

I am guessing but with that particular shaped extending dipper your machine is a 1981-84 machine. Nice it's 4WD too alot from that era were still 2WD.

Thanks very much everyone, I now know what I've got, the only other question is who do I have to kill to get a manual and handbook!
