From what little I know, the 3DS is the loading shovel version of the JCB 3D backoe loader, one of the Project 200 models introduced in 1980- the 3CX , 3C, 3D and 3DS.
Theres a photo from 1981 i've seen in a book of the 3C, 3CX and 3D lined-up outside the Rocester works, the 3C appears to be a basic version of the 3CX with 2WD and 3CMKIII loader arms (without parallel loader linkage) and is shown with a non-extending dipper.
A 2WD 3CX is shown (4WD also available) with non-extending dipper, the 3D shown has 4WD, Extradig, 6-in-1 loader bucket bucket and a hand breaker mounted on the left hand side behind the front axle.
Anyway we have a few JCB experts who'll know far more than me about the differences.

Re: New JCB 3CXL loading shovel
Wonder why was is it called the 3DS and not the 3CS
That has a been a question i have asking for many years now.. and one that no one seems to know the answer too .. 3CX and 3D both shared the same engine, transmission, hydraulics and external parts ... so i am no help either
