I'll second Ian on that. AFAIK it'll be a Perkins 4.236 in the 3CX, spares and secondhand engines shouldn't be hard to find. It was quite a commonly used engine by not only JCB, in the 3CX and other machines, but also by MF in the 50H and Cat in their 428. I believe Cat eventually took Perkins over, but the 4 cylinder Perkins in its current guise is still fitted today in machinery. The 2006 Cat M315 I used to drive had the same engine as a 3CX. The fuel pump went down one day and we pinched a fuel pump off an idle 3CX to get the Cat going again.
These guys, http://www.vicaryplant.co.uk/, albeit some distance from you, deal in JCB spares and may be able to help. (They also have a 3Ciii for sale on their website.)

At least masseys have a diff lock which is a lot more helpfull when bogged .ian.
Slightly off topic but why didn't MK1 , 11, 111 JCBs have a diff lock when the standard NUFFIELD/LEYLAND tractors JCB used had them fitted as standard ?
