Hi there I worked on an OLD Manitowoc crawler crane that had that same engine in it, Donkey start and what a bitch to start on a cold morning, but a lovely engine

Must have had an issue that it was hard to start with the pony. They were typically very reliable if the instructions in the operators manual was followed. We did and still can start them at -30 F with good luck. Takes twenty or more minutes to warm up the main on the pony but we use no ether. The ones they used at the south pole took an hour on the starting motor to warm up enough to start the main. The stretched D8s had a side tank from the old D4 and the like for a gas tank for the pony.
