The rams on that Bucyrus Erie track loader look like they would lift 40tons and yet the bucket is spring loaded, loving the old photos steve

Yes Ian,
That's because hydraulics were in their infancy. Most early BE dozer hydraulics I worked on operated at only 1,000 to 1,250 Lbs. pressure so they needed a big piston area to develop the required thrust.
Also the large volume of oil required to move the ram had the effect of gearing down the hydraulics, (less speed more power).

Cheers Fred, yes that makes perfect sense, hydraulics not as refined and powerful in the early days, its amazing how far we've come in such a short space of time!
