That first one, Steve - I've never seen a 6 x 4 Highwayman-type before! A rare truck.
Can you tell from the original who the operator was?
In fact if you have a better resolution image, any chance of getting a copy?

Tony

Edit: No problem - managed to enlarge it. Looks like a tag axle?

Very interesting indeed! Does look like a tag axle, must have been a in-house conversion then..? Can't make out the name on the door though, does anyone have a clue about who owned it?

Cheers, Patrick

Fred, that's a Constructor or Junior Constructor you have there.
I didn't know about this Ryan example, but Siddle C Cook of Consett ran one of these with a demountable ballast body which was also sometimes used as a 5th wheel tractor unit.

The tractor in the recovery pic appears to be the much smaller Highwayman tractor with a tag axle added.
Harrison's of Sheffield ran a few with mid-mounted tag axles, but this is the first evidence I've seen of a rear axle added.

The Scammell in the recovery photo looks like a shorter wheelbase than Fred's photo. I know nought about Scammells.

In the bottom photo Fred I gather thats a trailed scraper on the float, what controls the front wheels from wondering all over the road when loaded like that ??
Do they spin the drawbar around and hook it on the rear of the float ?
