But why did Berliet/Renault manage to use them for so long compared to Ford?

It may have been Ford starting the process of getting out of commercial, industrial and agricutural products?

I am not sure the Transcontinental was a very big seller.
Seem to remember it was very heavy for 32 ton max UK artics at the time.
It was also a complete Bitsa with almost everything bought in by Ford and many subcontract built by Foden for UK market.
When they first came out two Wimpey Low loader drivers delivered some heavy plant to a site i was on in Teesside from Southall driving big 6x4 Transcontinentals and were saying how fantastic they were compared to their previous old Leylands. Cruising at high speed all the way up A1.
