Pete I'd take a guess that it's for a sturdier bumper to be fitted to enable it to form part of a train of trucks for very heavy haulage; I think Atkinson may have done similar with the dual drive Venturer tractor unit.

That was a novel low loader. No hydraulic failures please.

3rd pic down, is that a Massey 203 or an early 50? Any idea what's on the front of the lowloader? Do I see a J4 pickup?
If a LandRover doesn't leak oil, it's run out.

It doesn't need a rocket scientist to see why that idea didn't get very far I suppose the idea was to do away with the old 'knock out back axle' system which was another rubbish idea, by that time most operators were simply loading machines on the side of the low loader.

I think it might be one of these:

I'm not so sure about the Austin - wings and roof look right, not convinced about door glass and repeater indicators....

Looks like Morris made a tractor unit version using the same cab - model FFK100

Thanks to the diecast model truck industry, I have discovered the trailer is a Pitt Alligator!

Massey 50B with the GRP cab, looks like a Commer van behind?

I would say a BMC Austin/Morris FF on the front of the low loader and a BMC J4 in the background.

Dad had J4 dropside from about 1971 to '81. That did a one hell of a lot of work but what a dog to drive!
