Just caught this tonight as I was returning home from a food shop I spotted an escort van with its lights flashing stuck at a junction, as I passed I spotted the large load that it was escorting and managed to quickly pull over jump out of the car get my small camera from my works bag and get the attached pics.

Nice ones! But what's that extra attached thing to the ballast of the Komatsu PC450? Extra power pack/generator? Never have seen sommit similar before...

Patrick the ballast weight attachment was a Caterpillar engine which I assume drives the 'vibro' attachment that the machine has been set up with.

Don't they normally use the hydraulical system for that? Mind you, I'm not to familiar with the tech side of things...

so what does the Vibro do hickie do ??? is just to punch holes in the ground or for some other reason ??
When I first saw the generator on the back I thought it must be from a scrap yard with a magnet but then I notice the big long thing on the float and the winch on the dipper

Not too sure exactly how this set up works but I'd hazard a guess that its used to compact loose ground prior to building on it? There maybe somebody here who knows exactly what this machine is for; all I can tell you for sure is that it was on a site where some new housing is being built so that's what made me think its used for ground compacting.

It's used for densifying granular soils, as well as for stone pile columns. It uses a hydraulic driven vibratory finger (can be seen under the counterweight between the tracks.
