Hi,
Are you sure you haven't already got a 4D ??
They were built with a decompressor for some aplications.
I know it's unusual, the only ones I've seen were the one we used to build and strip in college when I was learning the trade and one in a 1950s Broom Wade compressor.

Re: coles crane
Thanks for that Fred as you say it probably is an early 4 d but it is going to get changed for a more recent one with a bit of luck. Norm.

Re: coles crane
Hi all
Eventually got a spurious 4D replacement for crane
I need to identify it, the numbers on block and cyl head are as follows; block number T2 703F 6015/AAA
There is a circle with 1-9 around the perimeter and an arrow pointing to number 3 and a number 8B2 beneath it.
The rocker box top has the following numbers and letters; model 2712E
cap: 4.150litre date serial number; D8502/304
build number; 521/217/453/300
Head number; 743F6090AAA T1
Any info on year or type of engine would be greatly appreciated
Norm

Re: coles crane
AFAIK the 2712E is the newer industrial type engine that probably replaced the 4D.Would have been found in the old D series Ford Cargo(albeit on it's side) although I think most were 6 cylinder. You could register on here where I would think the good experts will help!

Re: coles crane
Agree with Agrimax
Part of the numbers you have given might be the casting date code. Possibly the 703F is 3rd June 1970. If not there should be a similar code to date the block somewhere. We have a similar engine in a Major based Weatherill loader.

Re: coles crane
Thanks for great info lads.
Sorry haven.t replied earlier due to circumstances beyond my control (as they say) looks like could be on a winner at last as 4d was on a very rarely used weld plant.

Re: coles crane
Hi all
Back on the coles crane project, old 4d engine is out, 2712e going in after mods to engine mounting frame.
The sump on the old engine was the wrong way round it also has a cast lug with a hole about inch to inch & quarter thru it, is this an old tractor engine.

Many engine manufacturers made different sump layout's you could have the pan in the middle, front or rear of the engine just dependent on what the application was.

Re: coles crane
Forgot to mention old engine also has a valve decompression lever and a facility on the crankshaft for a starting handle

Re: coles crane
Hi all.
Latest on coles crane is 2712e ford is in, now the time taking fiddly bits as in whole day spent trying to sort throttle linkage out, still not sorted but getting there. Have evicted the squatters nests and other bits of deadstock. Getting it working first then gonna refurb cab as its been overcome by time.
