I would think at least one of those conterweights will have to come off first as the crane will be counter jib heavy at the moment and half the main jib is missing with the rest of it hanging down the front of the crane. Martin you are correct they are usually around 5 ton segments of counterweight. BigKit the crane erector dismanters have no fear, i was ona crane up in London and the fitter turned up with a drum of cable and the light to go onto the end of the jib, he gets me to luff the jib down level and he takes the light attached to the cable 35 meteres out to the end if the jib no harness with me standing out on the counter jib holding the drum while the cable runs off of it. Mad but someone hasto do it!

The stress on the slew ring area must be very high. I think they will need to reduce that tail weight very carefully. It does look tied in well to the building not that far off the top.Wonder if it will be taken down all the way or just renew the machine deck area ?Perhaps the insurance company will insist on a complete dismantle job ?

I read somwhere that the mast section and the tie bars that hold the crane to the building were undamaged plus it also has a climbing cage on it too. but i would imagine as you say the insurance company and the HSE will want it taken down completely it will be interesting to see if the original base section will be re-used, I will be on what is known as an expendible base ie the first section is concreted into the ground.

Was listening to radio two lunchtime, the guy that got killed on the pavement's brother was on talking about the day he found out that his brother died. He paid a glowing tribute to his brother who sounded a realy nice guy.Just goes to show we don't know whats around the corner, so just live life to the full. Hopefully lessons will be learned from this tragedy.
