Re: Coles Cranes.
After missing a movie appropriately called "Flood" at the cinema, finally snapped the DVD up on eBay and watched it a couple of nights ago. It heavily features the Thames Flood Barrier, and in particular interest to me were the old Coles-built cranes of which there are one on each of the barrier partitions.
I have Googled around looking for information on these cranes but nothing is forthcoming just yet (I will keep looking). Does anyone know anything more about the cranes there?
Best regards
Gavin

Re: Coles Cranes.
Nice find! I'd bet on it that there aren't many of those old rail-mounted shunting cranes left and that one doesn't look in that bad of a condition either. They actually built quite a few models of these types of crane, if brochures are anything to go by. I've certainly seen a few different types during eBay searches, some of them getting to a fair size as well.
I've found a few Coles cranes recently which I've put the better pictures into a gallery on photobucket.

I cannot claim credit for the model identification of these cranes. They were identified by several people on the Lifting World crane forum. Credit given where credit is due! The crane partially hidden behind the Hydramobile 911 is something that I will try and get a better picture of when time & weather permits. Perhaps this weekend if there's nothing else going on.
Best regards

Information about the Coles Thames Flood Barrier cranes was confirmed by a chap at Coles who worked on building them. Full details can be seen on the Coles website in the new Oddities section.

Re: Coles Cranes.
Hi all, can anyone identify this particular model of Coles Crane, I used to drive these back in the 1970's, loading cargo onto small ships that traded to Kangaroo Island. The company had about half a dozen of them, some had the angular cab, some had a rounded cab top, but they all had flathead V8 Fords running on LPG driving a generator. They were certified to lift 6 tons I believe. I will post some more piks when I find them.
cheers for now
Chris

Re: Coles Cranes.
Here is another one of the Coles Cranes, taken on Kangaroo Island in the late 1970's. She looks a bit rough, but still did the business. At one time they decided to replace the Flathead V8 with a Perkins 4 cylinder diesel, but the thing kept breaking uni joints and it wasn't really a success. The ship is the auxiliary ketch Falie, which I was a crewman on at the time.
