Out of interest what is the job progression to become a crane driver these days?
When I was in the industry in the 60s and most had strut (lattice) jibs you would start as a mate on one of the larger cranes (35 or 50 tons - 100 ton was as big as they got) helping with the rigging and de-rigging and then graduated to your own a small crane such as a Muir Hill, Hydrocon or Redler - again strut jib, and from there worked your way up in size.
The company that I worked for had one of the first Coles 12 ton telescopic cranes for spot hire in central London - what a revolution! In those days small cranes went out on a 4 hour minimum and it was amazing just how many 4 hour jobs could be got into an 8 hour day with no rigging and de-rigging to do! Good for the driver and good for the firm.
Some of our regular work was installing office safes into the upper floors of low rise office blocks working for Chubbs, Leveys and Apostolides - much of it in narrow streets in the City of London. With strut jibs it was often necessary to close the street or to do the job on a Sunday - with the telescopic it was in and out in double quick time with a minimum of disruption.

When rope machines were a bit slack I went on a weeks course at the Birmingham depot of BCHC and went through all the theory and practical of hydraulic cranes and was then let loose on an Iron Fairy, what a baptism! I have still got my crane driving licence/permit for up to 100 tons (which was then the largest hydraulic crane in the World - as I recollect) I think the tutor was a guy named Peter Harris... nice bloke.

Bet you enjoyed long road trips in the Fairy! There was only one worse (imo) the Taylor Hydro!

What has always baffled me is why companies used to send out rookies on Iron Fairies, they were so difficult to operate - they used to crawl along at about 10 miles an hour (if that) mind you with no discernible suspension it would have been just about impossible to go any faster anyway, you weren't allowed to use the motorway network (although we all did) they had rear steer, only partial slew, you had to be a contortionist to get into them (even more difficult to get out) and the jobs you had to do with them needed such skill and know how, inching between huge machines in factories, lifting various awkwardly shaped machines with about 3 inches between the cat head and overhead gantries and cable ducts, manouvering free on wheels in very restricted environments, restricted vision, I reckon the guys who regularly drove those things were the top of the top - the A team! Much more difficult to operate than conventional lorry mounted cranes. Fortunately (from my perspective) I was soon out on a more orthodox machine.
