Here are some shots of Tower cranes that have been on some sites that I have worked on in Plymouth Devon UK,
The first shot shows the crane base being set in concrete.

Re: Tower Cranes
Went up a towercrane once as the firm I worked for had a fleet of them. Not for me, as I nearly crapped myself when I got to the top.Fred Dibnah also tried to get me up a 120 foot factory chimney once.No way.I am a ground based person.

Re: Tower Cranes
Hi Martyn,
I have to be honest here, I really fancy becoming a tower crane driver But I doubt it will ever happen as you have to go on the course which can cost over a £1000
And I am too stuck in my ways on the excavators to make the change now!!

Re: Tower Cranes
We used to have fixed bases and ones with huge blocks of concrete at the base of the crane.
We had one on rails on a site in Taunton that lifted clear of the rails when a very large full skip was lifted. We also erected "ant queen" 1 ton hoists. These were masts with a Lister drivern hoist at the bottom.Very effective but relied on a friction and centrifugal brake. The HSE would stop them these days.We used to test them before use with an inspector watching us.I drove a 22RB once with a drop ball, had to be carefull not to "birdcage" the hoist rope.
