Jones kl15 yard crane tyres.

Post #1 by Joel Fletcher-Hawkins » Mon Jan 12, 2015 9:04 pm

Hi all,

My name is Joel and I have just recently become the owner of some old cranes and road rollers, unfortunately none of these vehicles have come with an operators or maintenance manual so I don't know a lot about them. They have all sat for at least 7 years untouched in Coventry.
One of the cranes is (I think) a 'Jones kl 15'. The rear tyres of this crane are no longer useable and I need to source a new pair, I was just wandering if any one could help me out? The only info I know is the measurements on the old tyres which are 23x7 and the metal rim diameter is 15 inch.

Any other info you could share would be much appreciated

Kind regards

Joel Fletcher-Hawkins

Hi Joel and welcome to the site  you could try Warwick Wards they may be able to help you out or a plant tyre specialist; I would imagine that tyres are something that must be available for all types of vehicle as we have vehicles in preservation that go back to the year dot so as to speak. My first try would be a simple typing of the tyre size into Google and see if anything comes up; try different searches then, would be good if you could share some more photos of your cranes I am sure that other CMN members including myself would like to see them.

Thank you Jeremy for both your thoughts and replying.

I have to admit that this is my first real venture into old vehicles other than railway carriages and locomotives.(so nothing with odd sized rubber tyres)
The purchase of the two cranes and rollers were a result of buying a small railway engine.

Unfortunately Google does not seem to hold the answers for my tyres, but I will keep trying.
My local garage is asking his suppliers but it does not seem to be coming up trumps, so my next hope I guess should be the plant companies.

I am sorry that the picture is the wrong way up, I will try to do better with the next ones, but I will have to wait till I manage to get the vehciles out of the under growth.
The second crane is a 'Hyster Karry Krane', it has a broken gear box but that is all I know, need to get it started.

Kind Regards!

Joel

I wish you well with your efforts, there may be other CMN members who have an idea on who to try for spare tyres perhaps they will read this thread and comment?
You could also try looking in the advert section of some magazines like Classic Plant & Machinery and some of the classic truck magazines etc because folk tend to flog all sorts in the back of those magazines.

Did you end up finding tyres?
If so, where from and what brand?
I'm looking for a set as well.
Best of luck
Steve

Hi Steve,
I am sorry for the delayed response, yes the issue with tyres was resolved in the end by adapting a pair to LDV wheels to bolt on to the axle.
While I know this is not good restoration practice, it has alowed us to get the crane moved for transportation.
Since moving the crane the other two tyres have become a problem so I will probably land up repeating the process.

I am getting some 175 x 13 light truck tyres fitted and have them filled with a rubber filling to make them a solid tyre.
Good luck with your machine

Almost there now, been hard work finding the time to work on it.
How many more of these beautiful cranes are there in regular service?
