Telehandler

Post #1 by Markytur » Sat Apr 22, 2017 5:09 pm

Hi all
I have a jcb 520/2 telehandler 1981
I brought it as I'm doing a self build
The last couple of months it's got harder to get it to move forwards
It's now stopped moving completely
Will move backward sometimes
Believe it's the clutch,so gearbox is going to have to come out
Do anyone know someone that could do this
I can't, as just getting over a slipped disc
I'm near Billericay Essex
Thanks
Mark

Hi Mark,
I don't know much about this beast, but before you get stuck into it, check all the oils and fluid levels. A good reason for lack of movement is low or contaminated trans fluid, next on the list would be gearbox oil filters blocked. Could the linkage from the shuttle lever have become worn and so loosing movement at the selector?
If a LandRover doesn't leak oil, it's run out.

Hi hair bear
Thanks for answering
I check the oil ( running at tick over) also cleaned the filter in the shuttle box, wasn't really dirty
I checked that the linkage was moving the lever to the right positions ,don't know what else I can
It could be ?
Anyone got any ideas
Mark

It is possible that the shuttle clutches are shot. Could do with a pressure test really. I assume it has the manual shuttle lever which would make it the Borg warner type transmission?

Yes it's a manual shuttle,so now I know it's a Borg warner box,
Does anyone know where I would be able to buy the new clutch boxs from?

It really wants pressure testing, should be the same type of box as the build 5 3C111 and early 3CX. Similar transmission with mostly the same parts also fitted in Sanderson teleporters from the mid 80s to early very early 90s. There are several folk on here who have had this box to pieces. I have a suspicion that the wheeled digger may be easier to work on. I have helped a fitter do our Sanderson and the old 3C. In both cases the prop shaft was removed followed by whole transmission in one lump leaving the converter in place. One on the bench the shuttle was separated from the gear box. I seem to remember both forward and reverse clutch packs were changed along with the pump and a large belville washer.
You could perhaps find an agricultural engineer local to you if you don't want to tackle the job? Simon Vicary in Husbands Bosworth Leics may be able to do an exchange for you.
Another possibility would be Andrew Cross of A and R Handlers www.aandrhandling.co.uk/.
If you need an engineer try Tim Adcock based near Rayleigh 07977 003255
