Cat D5B

Post #1 by deltasierra » Wed Nov 28, 2012 8:39 pm

Our old timer brought out as a backup last summer coupled to 3 metre 5 leg heavy cultivator in the photos also pulled a 5 meter set of heavy discs and a mole drainer. After the wet summer compacted areas were very tough and 1st gear needed to be used to limit the final drive noise but generally 3rd gear work.
One of the last of its type built mid 80s 165hp and only 3500 hours on the clock, everything works except the aircon. We did find one drawback, in wet conditions with a heavy cultivator on the linkage and only 16 inch tracks it sinks!!!!.

Paul,

I am pretty sure there's no draft control on them. With the arms down put it in float and let the depth wheels on the implement maintain the depth.

draft is really only found on the smaller italian crawlers

Thanks for that Richard as I have said having trouble finding out any details as they never came out to Australia and will have to import one from the UK seems to be the only spot they were sold

Paul,

what is it you want to pull that needs draft control?....normally that is put on tractors to help with grip, carry a bit more load on the drive wheels......shouldn't be a problem with a crawler.....have you thought about a tool-carrier, its a three point linkage on a drawbar with wheels

Richard dont no that I need draft control but with our linkage disc ploughs we use they have no depth wheel so as soil conditions change they sought of suck the plough in deep if using good draft they compensate for this automaticaly however Im sure I could work something out. I dont know that Italian crawlers will be heavy enough for the type of work I have in mind had my heart set on a Cat D5b with linkage. Dont think a tool carrier will suit our conditions as we have head lands at each end of paddock that are fairly tight. This will give you some idea of what I am on about

great bit of film there.

Out of interest why go away from wheeled tractors?.....that 886 must be around 90/100hp and looks like its handling the plough alright, the soil conditions are dry and you seem to be hussling along about 5mph.......just trying to understand the benefit a crawler would offer over a tractor doesn't in those circumstances.

Of course its none of my business but.....how about a tidy little 7110/7210/8910 Magnum?....155hp Cummins 8.3l motor, 18sp powershift, decent cab.

by the way for me sugar-cane = snakes! .....have you got a Case/Austoft harvester for that?
