What are your favorite tractors ?

Post #1 by martyn williams » Mon Oct 03, 2011 9:26 am

I just wondered what classic and vintage tractors are the favorite of CMN members ? And how do the makes compare. Crawlers or rubber tyred ?
I like the Fordson E1A 's and the D2 , 4 's and TD/ BTD 6 crawlers. I was always impressed by the speed of the major crawlers.

E1A Majors , my home town Redcar is alive with them ,used for towing fishing boats into the water, the original 51-57 E1A preferred to the later Power Major and Super Major because they are viewed as too complicated !! :D

David Brown 990 (red)
I bought one of these new 1962. It replaced a 950.
Oversise tyres all round, wheel weights, front end loader and grill guard, "exhaust brake," foot throttle, power steering, pickup hitch and 3 way hydraulic valves. Under £1,000.

I used it contract lime spreading and it would run rings round the E1A New Major and Massey Ferg. 65 which I also used at the time.

Foot throttle brilliant on loader work, exhaust brake great on trailer work as was the diff-lock which was not fitted on many tractors then.

Sadly no photos.

David Browns, particularly the 880 selectamatic, it's what my dad drove for the local council when I was a nipper and used to come home for his lunch on. Apparently my first real spoken word was tractor.
It was also good to find out later in life that they were built reasonably close to home, well within 20 miles anyway. There's also the DB association with my all time favourite cars too,Aston Martins.

Also have a soft spot for early Fergies, my uncle had a TE20 for a few years, and my friend has built up a collection of three 35's, a TEF20 and a 65 which I've had some involvment in helping him restore, mainly grit blasting parts but a bit of engineering work too.
