I think I remember seeing the MF at the Royal Show in the early 80s.,

That's where I saw it.
If it's the one I'm thinking of, the spec was something like standard block/box/axle, 2 injectors per cylinder running from 2 back to back pumps, water injection in the intake system to cool the pistons, twin Opico turbos and a max rpm between 6 and 9k! How the whole thing didn't just detonate I don't know.
If a LandRover doesn't leak oil, it's run out.

I think you're thinking of The Nipper, built up out of a MF 265, which was the later evolution of all this project.
The 590 belonged to a contractor called Ron Gibbons who, as I recall, with the help of the Massey Lads juiced it up just for the show, then afterwards put the tractor back to work.....at that point they went off and got the 265 and then later the imported 2775 - Perkoil Express

I was involved in tractor pulling in the 80's. I was still at school but my mate created a fordson major called holy smoke. Sure he had it at the royal show in the 80's.
