JD 3130 head bolt specs.

Post #1 by TrevorJ » Tue Aug 05, 2014 2:01 pm

I'm a little curious. My "replacement" manual I purchased for the 3130 was a I&T JD-56. (This assumes a 3130 is very very close to a 2840, just made "elsewhere") I also have JD-50 which covers the 4030.

I also have a pdf of TM-4276 which is the French version of TM 4277. It makes a good reference even though I don't understand a word of French.

The curious thing is both the French manual and JD-50 agree on the head tension of 110 ft.lbs whereas JD-56 states 95 ft.lbs, despite the engine being 6329D. I did also note a slight difference between compression ratios of the I&T books from 16.8:1 (JD-56 - 2840) to 16.7:1 (Jd-50 - 4030)

Thoughts anyone?

(I used to have a very good manual for JD 3130 [I don't believe it was TM-4277, but it was a comprehensive manual all the same] which got nicked many years ago, along with a few other rarer books in my collection ... and *cussing* sods returned [read left under an irrigator for the night and then placed somewhere not too obvious in my work areas] a few of the common as mud ones after a few months, just after my last round of making sure no one had just quietly borrowed them and getting my claim going ... which of course scuppered my insurance claim.)

Hi Trevor; a wild stab in the dark here but I would suspect that there may be slightly different specifications based on machine engine serial numbers, which may allow for different engine compression ratios etc.
If like me you don't understand French simply put the words into any number of different free search engine translators.

Thanks Jeremy, later in the engine series could very well be it - though dropping the torque by 15 ft.lbs seems more like someone made a mistake ... but I will try and track down a TM 4336 (or similar ;-) ) just to compare.

 Yup, I give online translators a good work out from time to time, typing the words sucks a bit when you can't select the text.

Well the tm4277 is four years after the TM-4276, however the torque is for an "oiled" bolt so that does go a little way to explain the difference. (torques in field I usually drop about 10% less than specified when using a good lubricant on the thread)

Finally bought a digital version of TM-4277, but bugger, can't select text in it ... then again, my original book that got nicked, I couldn't do that either :-)
