Difficult one as they appear to be marmite tractors. The engine is rated by all as is the cab for their age. The expensive part can be the transmission and hydraulics. The trans is a combination of syncro gears and electr/hydraulically operated clutches. If right they can be smooth although the shift from 2-3 and 6-7 will always be more fierce. They are the top end of the power range and may have had a hard life. You will need to run it to working temp and try all the functions. The steering can go heavy at low engine rpm if the pump is weak. Check umder the right hand side of the cab that the ooil pressure switches actually have a wire connected and make sure the dash board lights all work. Look out for any transmission light coming on for anthing more than a brief flash when clutching or changing gear.
I like our one after a more old fashioned tractor but always have a slight niggle that it could be expensive if it goes wrong. The shuttle is a syncro basically and if used hard with tractor not stopping between shifts will cause wear. Any notchy changes in the shuttle or main 1-4/5-8 lever ought to be viewed with suspicion. If the tractor looks like it has had a hard life then leave it.

thanks for the advice...it was the gear box that was worrying. few people had said about them being a decent enough tractor but having transmission problems. its good to know what to look out for when trying to find a decent tractor. seen this one and been intrested in either getting a ford 7610 or 7810 but this new holland came up at a good price but if it has been treated roughly then it may not prove to be so cheap
