as far as i know the reason the battery is not charging is due to the ignition light no longer working and the circuit is broken. My father in law has a 272 also and it has an ignition light fitted separately to the dash, so i will probably do the same. the ignition light was working when i got the tractor originally, and the battery was charging perfectly. i took apart the dash to get at the bulb, but it is fine, not blown. however the circuit board is a big blue mess of corrosion! none of the other gauges work either!

If I was you the first thing I would do is test the alternator this link below should be fairly close to the correct type needed for your tractor I think

if the alternator all checks out ok and you feel its the dash I would pull the dash out and get some turps or metho and give it a really good clean
clean the plugs and other connections as well I feel with some time and care you should be able to get it all to work again

good luck

Checked alternator over the weekend with a multimeter and its working fine. Checked the dashboard and found the break in the circuit. Sadly it could not be fixed as i do not possess a soldering gun. So i bought a separate bulb holder and wired that to the ignition instead and this seems to be working fine.
