Re: Oldtimer Movie Austin-western Grader from 1959
Hi, BMI113.
Most Austin Western, Aveling Austin, Avelling Barford and a lot of Clark graders had either 4x4x4 or 6x6x6, 4wd with 4 wheel steering or 6wd with 6 wheel steering. The drive for the front wheels was via a LONG drive shaft from the transfer case at the rear. Also, most were full hydraulic steering on both ends - - - WAY before John Deere or Caterpillar ever put steerable back ends on any of their graders.
The rear wheel steering on the 6x6x6 graders was via a turntable arrangement between the crown wheel and pinion and the main frame so that the whole tandem case assembly turned under the machine. It worked quite well and these were quite good graders for the time, robust and very hard to bog.
Thanks for sharing.
