Hello Graham
The six cylinder version were used in four class 37 locos as an experiment.I was involved and worked alongside the Mirrlees engineers as they developed those units for rail traction. But two locos were fitted with six cylinder Rustons of 1700 hp.To be honest they were better than Mirrlees. The class 37's were fitted with an English Electric 12CSVT engine of 1750 hp.They became known as growlers as you would have heard them coming through Abercynon.

Re: Mirrlees Blackstone
There's a couple of MB's in the CHP plant at Manchester Airport, I had a look around them soon after they had been installed - I think they were V16's about 10,000bhp, but my memory has faded a fair bit.
They used about 5% Diesel (as the ''spark'') and 95% natural gas as fuel. The airport were having big problems at the time (about 1993) as the fuel combination was causing cylinder heads to fail via cracking. There was several cracked heads on the floor and a big row going on regarding warranty with MB!
Julian.
