I have dabbled with LED's before on my Komatsu PC1100 and it worked ok so I am now going to set at my WSI VW van and put in a flashing beacon on the roof and some working headlights.
I have had the van appart tonight, only one screw at the back and there seems to be plenty of room in the back for a battery box and a few wires.
The Van
Plenty of room to work in there
A couple of 3mm superbright white LED's will fit in the existing light cluster mouldings with the help of a small hole.
With them satbehind the clear plastic headlight lenses it should look nice.
I will probably drill a small hole in the roof where the circle is there and pop in a small yellow flashing LED from the inside.
Just need to figure out my circuit and what LED's/resistors I need over the weekend and should be able to crack on with it next week!
Service van LED project.
Service van LED project.
That's looks really good so far so it should look really good when it's finished

Andy,
Yeah I have got several projects on the go, Komatsu WA900 & 800, a PC1100 and a Volvo BM A35. I really must get them done, they've been on the bench for months!
Richard,
Cheers for the link, they look brilliant, could possibly get away with the 1:43 on bigger machines, maybe not the vans though. It's hard enough working at 1:50 scale let alone 1:87!

Re: Service van LED project.
Spent all afternoon and into this evening plumbing the electrics in, have to say I am really pleased with the outcome.
Here are some pics.
Power supply and circuit board
glued the board to the back of the cab compartment
Drilled the holes in the front plastic light cluster and pushed the LED's in
I had to remove the spare wheel at the back of the van on the underside so I could mount the switch
The finished article, well for now.
The yellow flashing LED does not sit very high on the roof due to the thickness of the diecast . I just need to get a small yellow LED cover to raise it a little.
I also have a couple of rear facing spotlights to put on the back above the rear doors. No LED's in them!

Those headlights look spot on.
Can you do dipped and main beam?.
When are you installing the hazards?.

Cheers for the comments all
Richard, for now this is about my limit, my sausage fingers wont let me go near any smaller LED's for the hazard lights
