Pivot steer , variable belt drive transmission , way ahead of its time !

Re: George Fowell OR Fowler Dumpers
Hi
I have a George Fowell dumper available in Cornwall.
Petter PA1 petrol engine (Made '51-'56 I believe). No mag or carb, but these may surface.
Very rusty, but basically intact. Skip and large oil bath air filter present, top of gear box missing.
Tyres would probably go if not heavily loaded,
Engine turns, with some compression.
I will try and find the chassis and engine nos.
I would hate to scrap it ,so is anybody interested

Hi Craig,
It's not a variable belt drive, just a bog standard single speed belt transmission. They used to have to use rezin based belt dressings to make them grip. A few other makes, (Benford, Drayton), used flat belt drives too, I even remember sugar being used to make them grip.

Hi Fred ,
Is it some sort of clutch then ? or just a belt instead of a chain to transmit the drive .

Hi craig,
Yes the belt did in fact opperate as a clutch, it was tensioned by a jockey pulley to create the drive.
The pulley was released allowing the belt to slip when the combined clutch/ brake pedal was applied.

Re: George Fowell OR Fowler Dumpers
Hi, I have one already, but I would be interested in yours! How much are you asking?
Re: George Fowell OR Fowler Dumpers
We have had one of these dumpers for thirty odd years.
It was last used in the 1980's when we laid in a water main to Magpie Mine, Derbyshire.
It has spent the years since in my shed. I keep meaning to do something with it, you all know the feeling.......
Anyway, I will be taking it to the Apedale Open Weekend this weekend (8th & 9th September 2012).
The Moseley Railway Trust have themed the weekend 'Contractor's Delight'
Incidentally, can someone please tell me what the spark plug number should be for this engine? It is the Petter.
Thanks!

Yes, most of the bits are there. The only bits missing really are the exhaust pot and an air cleaner.
I even have a valid registration document and the last tax disc from 1962.

The railway do have a lot of narrow gauge contractor's engines and rolling stock.
We have also dug out a Warsop S6 road breaker and hopefully, a Benjo compactor (paddy's motorbike).
