A 15W40 mineral oil would probably be the most suitable, rather than any modern semi for fully synthetic oil

G'Day Vince, 15w/40 0r 15w/30 depending on the ambient air temps. Thinner in cold climate and slightly thicker in hot. I use the 15w/30 here in the moderate climate and because it is not working hard at all any more as it is just for shows and rallies now. So a diesel oil is the best and the one I use by Gulf Western is also a detergent oil so it cleans out everything inside and after a few oil changes it takes longer to go black but that is what it is menat to do anyway to trap the contaminants.
Good luck with your start up and let us know how you get on.

Hi All .thank you for your help
It didn't go well yesterday we had around 6inch of snow and very cold so postponed start up until today
Could anyone tell me if there is a way of taking the play out of the steering box? That and polish the name plate and pat number plate is all that's left
Thanks in advance
regards vince

The steering box in my Liner Roughrider has an adjustment bolt on the flat plate. YOu loosen the nut and gentley wing the screw in untill it stops then lock the nut up. I did this to mine but then found there was still more freeplay so I removed the steering box along with the column and stripped the lot. I replaced the small bearing at the top of the column as it was so cheap to buy but the main problem I found was that the bottom felt oil seal had leaked oil out years back and a previous owner decided to fill it all with grease which is the worse thing you can do. No matter how much grease gets put in as soon as you use the steering it pushes the grease away from moving parts and they wear away. Another problem was that the small peg that follows the acne square thread inside had worn away and was the next cause of free play.
I welded up the peg and ground it back into shape. Took the box to the bearing shop and they found a nice double lip oil seal to replace the old felt one and with some care I put it back together and all is pretty good now. The trick with mine was that the oil filler was facing down and not up and this was the only way it could be fitted so I filled as much of the box with oil as I could, bolted it back in then found that I could slowly pour oil down the column past the bearing so it is now well and truly full but not over full.
My steering box was made by Bishop and these were used in a number of British cars and especially MG's. Looking online there was as workshop specialising in Bishop steering boxes for MG but boy they know how to charge.

This is the offending article it took most of the day to remove the steering wheel someone welded the wheel to a nut underneath the wheel when I got it off it is the nut that pulls the shaft up to take out the play they may have welded it to take up the space between the bottom of the wheel to the nut because it kept coming loose I'll get some shims
thanks again vince

Nice work Vince. That's a totally different box to mine. After posting I then thought you may have hydraulic steering.
I'm curious as to what holds the steering wheel on once you have that nut adjusted.
