two ton dumper handbrake shoes needed

Post #1 by longdog1970 » Sun Feb 07, 2021 6:14 pm

HI
Im new to this forum and wondered if anyone can help me? I've acquired a dumper but don't know the age of it or what type it is, I'm after a set of handbrake shoes that fit on the end of the gearbox before the prop shaft. if anyone could help me identify the machine and where I can get a set of shoes from? I've attached a few pictures.

Hi Clifford welcome to the forum  taking a look at the photo you have posted, the dumper looks like a Thwaites to me, however I may stand to be corrected on that, somebody on here will definitely be able to point you in the right direction.

Hi Jeremy

its got a lister Petter PH2 engine, on the side of the engine it has a plate with PH 2 85135 18hp on it, would that help to identify the year and model?

I would guess Thwaites from mid to late 70s when they switched to oil immersed brakes and the handbrake manually applied the service brakes. Could you get the shoes relined?

it has front brakes only inside the axel, the handbrake attachment is on the gearbox not the axel, I will have a look for somewhere that relines brakes, is it a two ton would you know?

OK I had not realised there was an era of inboard brakes with a separate handbrake. Most of the smaller dumpers were only braked on the front axle even into the 90s. I can't rember whether or not my 2005 3 ton has rear brakes. Mid 90s Manitou telehandler was only braked on front.
I guess the 2nd lever, if part of the transmission, must be hi/lo or a simple forward/reverse shuttle. I would say the latter more likely. I am thinking you may have a 21/2 or 3 ton there as the skip looks larger and 6 stud rather than 5 stud axles compared to the old 2ton 4000 we used to have.

Almost any brake repair shop will be able to re-bond new lining material or you may even get lucky and find a set of riveted ones that you can do yourself.
This style of handbrake at the end of the gearbox is the same idea as on your Reggie parked in the background and just about every other 4wd vehicle and truck on the road today so this will be very easy to do.
some of these off road vehicles and tractor went over to oil immerse brakes around the period that this is being guessed at so again not unusual but I have never had to do any as yet.
Great find and welcome to the wonderful world of Dumpers.
Cheers Cobba
