Hope someone can help identify this dumper, I think it is 1 ton gravity tip, has single cylinder petter diesel.
i guess it is Thwaites. Would be great if I could get hold of workshop manual.
Initial problem is that oil is getting into brakes. Presumably i need to replace seals / bearings / shoes.
Not having tackled this type of job before, I am a bit lost. I have removed front wheels and brakes, back to wheel bearing with drive shaft coming through. Now what? How do I remove bearing? apparently there is 1 seal behind bearing and the 1 in plate that's removed (4 bolt fixing)
Do I need to take off and disassemble whole drive shaft? Is this a big job or can seals and bearings be replaced from end of shafts.
I really appreciate any help you are able to offer.
Mike

Re: Identify small dumper
Not sure if the half shafts are fitted into tapers, something like morse tapers, if they are I believe you have to be quite aggressive with them. is there any ID on the axle?

Re: Identify small dumper
Hi,
You need to draw the half-shaft and bearing to replace the inner seal.
There will be a bolt, (9/16 AF spanner I think), in the axle tube which retains the bearing. If you slack that off you should be able to remove the shaft and bearing easily.
Put the hub back on, (no need to tighten), use a block and hammer against the back of it and the shaft and bearing should just tap out and allow you to access everything you need.
Be sure to replace any shims as you find them.
Hope this helps.
Fred

Re: Identify small dumper
Thanks Fred, Norm and Pete,
I have identified it as a Thwaites Nimbus.
The half shafts were just splined into the diff, no other fixing. I pulled them out using the nut from the end of half shaft against some spacers / big washers, I had carefully sourced them so they cleared the bearing. Was worried it may knacker the nut, but worked well.
Thanks for all your help, maybe I will ask again next time I am stuck.
Cheers
