PH2 Engine conversation to Electric Start

Post #1 by Andyinfrance » Mon Apr 27, 2015 2:47 pm

Hi all,
I am looking to convert my Thwaites Orion dumper with a PH2 engine to electric start as my shoulder is starting to hurt, I did do some investigation last year only to find that the cost was above £600!! what I'm looking for is a cheaper way for the conversation does anyone have any experience or advice.

Thanks

You could consider a 'dynastart' unit, that is a vee belt dynamo/starter combined unit that is fitted to a few of the older marine diesels like volvo md1 and the like. You could put the vee belt directly around the flywheels machined edge, you would have to make a couple of incisions in the tinwork to allow the tinwork to slide on with the belt in place, and if you connect it all up it would charge too, starting would be a matter of lifting both decompressors and letting the dynastart accelerate the engine enough, they're not that powerful a unit but i would think would cope with a ph2 allright.
