early 1970's Benford 15cwt Dumper steering column & box

Post #1 by minimad220 » Mon May 19, 2014 6:16 pm

Hi All

I need some help (don't we all for owning these things)
I've recently aquired a late 60's/early 70's Benford 15Cwt dumper.

It is in a very sorry state having been robbed of parts and sat on a very exposed hillside for 20+years.
It was obviously looked after once as all of the underside is thick with many decades of grease (plenty of moss growing on top of it now though) so the underside is not too bad.

My problem however, is the steering box has been opened at some time (a long time ago) the inside of the steering box is fused into a rusty lump and the steering column is also rusted completely solid.

Can anyone help? Were these steering boxes fitted to other vehicles? anyone any idea where i might be able to find something i can use to make a replacement?

I'll need to find out if i can repair the belt clutch as well at some point but i need to get the steering repaired first if we have any hope of getting it moving again.

Thanks
David

Hi,
There is a chance i could free off the internal parts of the steering box although it would not be easy. However the steering column is fully fused. I will have to replace the column and shaft.
Ideally i'd like to find either an exact match or some donor complete with column and box that i can make fit.

Hi all,
When I got my Benford the Steering Box was shot, Some one had bodged on a Steering Column from an MF Tractor.
I was lucky because in my hoard that I have added to for many years I had a Steering Column that came out of a 1939 or there about's
25ft Vosper Launch.
I have had this Steering Column for over 40 Years so I thought it was time I used it.
With a few bits & pieces and my little welder a Bracket was made and every thing lined up.
The steering is a bit heavy with only One & Half turns Lock to Lock it works.
All I need to do now is find a Pistol Grip Hand Brake.
Graham.
