hi i have what i believe to be a thwaites orion dumper, i would like to register it for road use and preferably don't want to have to pay for road tax. i have the engine number and i believe it was made in the 60's, can anyone help?

They are £0 for RFL. You'll have to ring the DVLA and I am sure they will issue you with a reg no and log book. You may have to present it at a VOSA test station tho'

When I did mine, I insured it on engine number only, and took along a letter from Winget stating its year, engine number and chassis number as correct, and they gave me a 1967 age related registration. HFX 185E, and tax class of Historic.

does Thwaites still exist? where did you get your chassis number from? VOSA said i could make up my own chassis number but would some how have to prove the age to qualify for free tax & i would have to apply for a first time registration document which looks horrendously complicated

Clive, do you know if the engine number alone is good enough to get a log book?

Come to think of it I did insure a really old thwaites 4000 (hand start 2 cyl petter) about 20 years ago using the serial no'. For occaisional on/off road applications (not commuting or shopping) that should be possible I'd say. They just need to ID the vehicle somehow. I've got some number plates and a log book for sale if you need 'em! :lol:
