Thwaites 6000 with PH2 - Back ache !

Post #1 by Yozza » Mon Mar 04, 2013 10:58 pm

Hi folks,

Semi-newbie, I've been hibernating (like my dumper) and now the sun has made an appearance I'm ready for action (unlike my dumper).

I tried starting her the other morning but gave up after half a can of quick start and a hand full of cranking blisters

I've done a bit of work on the dumper and the only issues I have are the following (some of which may be related to each other)?

Pig to start, one cylinder feels like it has a lot more compression than the other.

Engine feels a bit weak.

Takes a while to rev the engine (once she has started).

My gut feeling is an injector is at fault (both pumps are good).

Can anyone tell me about the fuel priming levers, I've just seen these mentioned and never knew about these. How should they be used?

Sorry for the 'war and peace', my back is aching like a good un, can't afford to have a bad back.

Thanks (in advance).

Yozza

Good evening Yozza, like yourself a newbie here. However I am not a newbie to engineering. What makes you think that one compression is down (lower than the other)? i am assuming it seems easier to turn at one point than the other? As for priming, you will only get priming when you have the pump rack in the excess fuel position. In truth there is little difference between priming and turning the engine over without compression 5 or 6 times. Did it run ok when before it went into hibernation?

Thanks for the reply Greg.

In answer to your question, yes, one cylinder can be overcome with the crank handle, whereas the rear most (initial start up) cylinder takes some beating.

Regarding the priming, I suspected that may be the case as it's not mentioned on the Thwaites start up sequence.

It did run before hibernation, but like I said, it feels a bit gutless, when loaded up, it struggled on a slight incline in 1st gear.

My next plan of attack is to check the injectors unless there are any other areas worth investigating first?

Can injectors be serviced by a DIY enthusiast ;) or do they need a specialist or just replacing with new?

Thanks,
Yozza
