Hello all,
I’m working on a 1963 Thwaites Dumper with a Petter PH1 engine. Recently it’s developed a fault where it wouldn’t start.
I followed the fuel priming process and got it going but it stopped again after approx 50 yards. When I tried re-priming it there was was no resistance to operating the priming lever and sod all fuel at the pipe Union just shy of the injector. Got it going again only to have it conk again on the first hill. After quite a bit of faffing gave up and towed it to the workshop.
I’m wondering what could cause this fuel starvation and slack priming lever. The fuel hoses between tank and filter and also between filter and pump look perished and I was wondering if these could be sucking in air?
Any thoughts / advice greatfully received.
Cheers

Re: Thwaites Dumper Fuel Starvation Issue
the two most common things that come to mind is a leaking fuel hose or crud in the tank blocking the fuel line
If these are the type of motor I imagine it should be fairly simple to fix as there wouldnt be a lot on them to go wrong
One last thought maybe the breather on the fuel tank might be blocked but I would think this would take 10 minutes or more of running to be a problem

Have you had the sediment bowl off or the tank tap. With a full tank it should almost self bleed through the injector pump bleed screw.
