HELP... Spicer/Tuner COM-T4-2012 benford 4000PS hydrostatic transmission

Post #1 by Stever » Sun May 03, 2015 4:42 pm

HELP !
we have a 1995 benford 4000PS Dumper it has a Spicer/Tuner COM-T4-2012 transmission i think its also called a compact plus transmission, it works fine in all 4 forward Gears, we have fitted New Direction change joystick that works fine, but in reverse you have to really increase the engine revs to get it to move, then it feels like its not driving very well, we have checked the fluid and its ok, seems to get worse when its hot, do we need a new transmission, if so anyone know where we can get one ?

Hi
difficult to diagnose, but what I do know is that the transmission pumps are a very popular spares request.
As this is on of the cheaper components in the box, may be worth a try first.
Pumps also tend to react badly when oil gets hot, so again points to this being a possibility.

I have in stock here.

A picture of the G/Box would be handy, is it the 1 with 2 Vickers mag valves on the back end to work the F-R bit if so it sounds like it needs a bore and sleeve on the back case oil journal, plus a bit of shim work on the mainshaft will be needed along with a re-plate and re-seal of the slave pistons.

could well be the solenoid valve on top of the box.
have you tried swapping over the coils, or wires to see if problem shifts to the forward gears?

Post a picture of the G/Box I am sure I can tell you what your problem will be, is the main case bolted together in 2 half sections with Vickers valve control on the top towards the back. tctractors

I had exactly this with my be benford pt9000. I put new plates in the clutch pack and bought a service exchange torque converter. All done and pulls like a train. Did all of the solenoid things first but unfortunately it was not a cheap easy fix but the overhaul should last some years!

If its the g/box I am thinking it is?? the usual issue is the oil feed entering the clutch hubs is via the end of the shaft with seal ring porting (steel rings) reverse is the usualy hub to fail due to wear in the housing needing a bore and sleeve to repair, then it needs the shafts shimming to correctly pre-load the taper bearings, there is nothing much to these transmissions with all the parts no trouble to get from A.T.S Cannock, the cost from them is very low, the converter might probably be O.K. with just the easy bit needing sorting, the converter will need to be un-bolted from the flywheel to all come out as a lump. tctractors

If I remember the worst bit was aligning the torque converter back on the shaft when refitting but it might be easier on the smaller unit. I changed the converter because it was easy to do at the time but my transmission slip was definitely down to the clutch pack. TC is right the bits are not expensive.

Good luck
