Track snapped in moat
Had a bit of bad luck when my track chain snapped de-silting a moat at 2.45 on a friday afternoon! Fortunately I had spare tracks on the job, how oftern does that happen, and it only took 1 1/2 hours to get it all done from start to finish. The washing took a little longer!

Bloody 'ell mate, that's one hell of a moat, looks more like the river Avon at low tide
Does running a tracked machine through that sort of gloop do any damage to it? I can imagine water and shit getting into the idler rollers and slew motor etc and seriously shortening its life...
Julian.

Re: Track snapped in moat
Never had any real problems before and I do many de-silts each year. To be honest the tracks were a bit worn which is why I had picked up the spare set that were on the job. The set on it did n't look that bad although I was going to change them. Well sh.t happens! It actually broke about 15 metres away in a soft bit and I managed to walk it up on to a harder lump. A week before there was 4ft of silt there and 5ft around the corner. I have been experimenting with a concrete pump to move the silt on this job because of the poor access. We have moved in excess of 3000m3 in two weeks with one pump and one of my modified track dumpers over a distance of 150m to the tip. I'm impressed with the pump and I've got lots of photos of the operation which I'll post up shortly. Its been an interesting experiment!

Just been reading the article about this job in earth movers. have you any more pics of jobs that you have done since? Do you still have the same machines, or do you have anymore? Was a good read, and am really interested in what you do!

Re: Track snapped in moat
It's never usually that bad. That was a freak accident. The worst part is digging the tracks out! My advice..........delegate!
Honestly, I never usually get that dirty and it all adds to the fun. Tho' one time in mid winter, after I'd spent 2 hours pumping down a pond I got out of the cab to shout some orders. I slipped on the track and went waist deep into the silt!!!!! **CKIN* *ELL! After spending that long pumping on a short day I decided to strip off and I sat in my smalls all day with the heater on! Money, wot it makes you do!
